There comes a moment in your academic journey when your work is no longer just about research.
It becomes personal.
For me, my dissertation is not just a requirement, it is a reflection of who I am, where I come from, and the communities I serve.
As a proud Latina, born in Puerto Rico and raised in the mainland United States, I have lived the experience of navigating language, identity, and belonging. Spanish was my first language, and like many multilingual individuals, I learned to find my voice in spaces that did not always understand it.
That experience shaped me.
It shaped how I see education. It shaped how I connect with others. And it shaped the work I am doing today.
My dissertation is grounded in culturally responsive practices and the lived experiences of individuals whose voices are often overlooked. I am especially passionate about working with Latino communities, particularly men, where conversations around identity, parenting, and challenges such as alcohol and substance use are deeply complex and often misunderstood.
Through this work, I have learned that culture is not something we leave at the door.
It is something we carry with us into every space.
It lives in our language. In our values. In our stories. In our silence.
And when we create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and respected, transformation begins.
This journey has not been easy.
There have been moments of uncertainty, revisions, and learning curves. But through it all, I have remained grounded in my purpose, to serve, to uplift, and to create meaningful change through education.
I am reminded that research is not just about data.
It is about people.
It is about honoring their stories with dignity and care.
As I continue this journey, I carry with me my culture, my experiences, and my commitment to making a difference.
Because when we lead with culture and purpose, we do more than educate…
We connect. We empower. We transform.
And that is the kind of work that truly matters.
How has your cultural identity shaped your work or purpose? I would love to hear your thoughts.
Rooted in story. Rising with purpose. Siempre creciendo.
