Spanish is the language of my roots, my family, my childhood memories, and the island that shaped me. It is the language of my parents, my culture, and many of the stories that live within me.
English became the language of opportunity, education, and growth. Through it, I earned my degrees, built a career supporting families, and found new ways to share my voice through writing.
Speaking both languages has taught me that identity is not something we leave behind as we grow. Instead, it expands. I do not have to choose one part of myself over another. I can honor where I come from while embracing where I am today.
Perhaps that is why I proudly carry both of my family names, Hernández Pérez. They remind me that I am the product of two histories, two legacies, and countless lessons passed down through generations.
Language has given me more than words. It has given me connection, understanding, and the ability to build bridges between people, cultures, and experiences.
For that, I am grateful.
